California Community College Leaders Gather in Sacramento for the League’s 2019 Annual Legislative Conference and to Meet with Members of the State Legislature
SACRAMENTO, CA – The Community College League of California (The League) host its 2019 Annual Legislative Conference in Sacramento, January 27-28, at the Sheraton Grand Hotel. This year’s conference will focus on fighting student food and housing insecurities, funding for community college facilities projects, and removing barriers to dual enrollment.
Senator Connie M. Leyva will provide a keynote address highlighting the important role California Community Colleges play in building a skilled workforce that meets the needs of today’s changing labor market and providing career opportunities for all Californians.
The League's Annual Legislative Conference provides a unique opportunity for chancellors, presidents, trustees, and community college advocates to connect and learn about key legislative issues impacting California’s community colleges. Sessions will focus on best practices to support low-income students, funding to support student-success programs and to close the achievement gaps, and advocacy strategies for the current legislative year.
Attendees will be joined by Assemblymember Monique Limón, Member of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee on Education, for a town hall meeting to discuss the Legislature’s higher education priorities. “Town hall meetings provide an opportunity for elected officials to discuss their 2019 higher education legislative agenda, and community college presidents, trustees, and advocates to share feedback and concerns regarding the implementation of current policies,” said, Larry Galizio, President & CEO of the Community College League of California.
In addition, the conference will conclude with a capitol briefing held by the League’s Affordability, Food & Housing Access Taskforce on Monday, January 28 at 4:00 p.m. (California State Capitol, Room 444) to address the challenges community college students face with hunger and homelessness. The briefing will include:
- An overview of the Assembly Speaker’s Office of Research’s report, College Ready, Hungry, and Homeless
- Student Testimonials
- Statewide Data and Preliminary Survey Results
- Early Recommendations from the Taskforce
