CCLC President & CEO Named to Coalition for Transformational Education Steering Committee

Larry Galizio, Ph.D., Community College League of California President & CEO, has been named to the Coalition for Transformational Education’s (CTE) Steering Committee. The organization focuses on empowering higher education institutions nationwide to implement programs that create opportunities for students to seize a sense of belonging, agency, purpose, and the power of knowledge.

“The Coalition for Transformational Education’s work is the essence of what we do in the California Community Colleges,” said Galizio. “Degree attainment is important, although it is not the only measure of a student’s lifetime success. Our colleges emphasize overall educational experience, sense of community connection, and general well-being, and I am honored to represent this perspective nationally.”

CTE was created in response to a Gallup Alumni Survey that found that college graduates are more likely to thrive if they had a professor or mentor that cared about them and encouraged their goals and dreams while they were students. The coalition acknowledges that these experiences influence student success in college and beyond.

“The Steering Committee believes that community colleges are an important opportunity for the Coalition for Transformational Education and is confident that Dr. Galizio, particularly as the president of an organization of 116 community colleges, will bring new insights that will guide us in community college engagement,” said Richard K. Miller, CTE founding chair and President Emeritus of Olin College of Engineering.

Galizio hosted Miller and Keith Buffinton, Ph.D., CTE executive director, on the League’s podcast, Leading Community Colleges in California. During the show, they talked about the coalition’s founding and mission, as well as the importance higher education has on student lives and mental health after graduation.
