With a divided Congress and a Democratic president, legislators will not likely reauthorize the Higher Education Act this year. However, critical issues that impact community colleges and our students are still being discussed– primarily over increasing the debt ceiling and Department of Education regulations. Below are the CCLC's summations on the debt ceiling, Dept. of Education regulations, Title IX & gainful employment.
Debt Ceiling
Last week Congress passed, and President Trump signed into law, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, a $2.2 trillion stimulus package intended to alleviate economic distress during the current Coronavirus pandemic and economic downturn. It is the largest stimulus package ever passed and it is worth roughly 10% of the United State’s GDP.
More than 100 trustees, CEOs, faculty, students and other California community college (CCC) colleagues descended upon Washington, D.C. February 10th-12th, 2020, for the annual National Legislative Summit (NLS) hosted by the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT).
Each year, as we prepare for the National Legislative Summit (NLS), I consider the cost/benefit analysis of this 3,000-mile trek to our nation’s capital to advocate on behalf of our students and our 72 districts.
The January 27, 2017 Executive Order suspending entry of nationals from seven majority Muslim countries serves to renew and reinforce the League’s commitment to the multinational, multiethnic, and extraordinarily diverse student body attending California’s 114 Community Colleges.
